The Mercedes AMG G63 is built on the same ladder chassis as the original G from 1979, but now carries a hand-built 4.0 litre V8 biturbo with 585 hp and 850 Nm under the bonnet. That power is sent through a nine-speed automatic to all four wheels. The three fully locking differentials are still there, as is the low-range transfer case for serious off-road use. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds, which is notable for a vehicle weighing 2,485 kg. On the road it drives noticeably more composed than its predecessor, thanks to the new independent front suspension.

Fun fact: under partial load, the engine automatically drops to four cylinders to save fuel. The transition is smooth enough that the driver never feels it happen.

Die kracht gaat via een negentraps automaat naar alle vier de wielen. De drie volledig blokeerbare differentielen zitten er nog altijd in, net als de reductiestand voor zwaar terrein. Van 0 naar 100 km/u gaat in 4,5 seconden, wat voor een voertuig van 2.485 kg opmerkelijk is. Op de weg rijdt hij merkbaar beschaafder dan zijn voorganger dankzij de nieuwe onafhankelijke voorwielophanging.

Leuk detail: in de gedeeltelijke belasting schakelt de motor automatisch terug naar vier cilinders om brandstof te besparen. De overgang is zo soepel dat je het als bestuurder niet voelt.
