“The Cayman Complex” — a term coined fairly early in the life of Porsche’s smallest coupe. It came from what the media and consumers saw as a car suffering from a little-brother complex: a sports car that was constantly held back so its bigger brother, the 911, wouldn’t have a direct competitor within the Porsche lineup.

For many years, there was good reason for the expression. The Cayman clearly had a chassis and configuration that were better suited to enthusiastic driving, but its powertrain was never quite on par with the 911.

Then came the GT4.

The 981 generation was the first, and that is exactly what we have here. The classic solid black exterior is paired with lightweight wheels wrapped in Michelin rubber. The wheel design itself draws inspiration from the legendary Fuchs wheels.

While the exterior design is based on the 981 chassis, it differs considerably from the standard Cayman. The front end has been given a more aggressive appearance, helping both cooling and aerodynamics. Further back, there’s a more aggressive air intake behind the door, accompanied by a subtle GT4 badge.

But it’s at the rear where the car really sets itself apart. A fixed rear wing and deeper diffuser complete the look, giving the GT4 the appearance of a genuinely mean little bulldog.

Inside, it’s all about the driver, finished entirely in leather and Alcantara with contrasting yellow stitching. Everything you need to drive fast is right where it should be.

Between the seats sits what might just be the highlight of the car: the manual gear lever. A dual-clutch gearbox may be a few seconds faster, but in this class, and with these kinds of performance figures, nothing beats the mechanical feel of changing gears yourself.

The manual gearbox is paired with a 3.8-litre flat-six producing 385 hp, sending all of its power exclusively to the rear wheels. Bucket seats with matching yellow stitching complete the cabin, with a half roll cage sitting behind them.
Porsche’s GT4 platform remains one of the most engaging driving experiences in the brand’s history. With just 25,000 km on the clock and PPF protecting the most exposed areas, this GT4 remains in wonderful condition.
