It is quite easy to romanticize Italy. A Mediterranean climate. Beautiful views combined with fantastic food and perhaps a glass of wine or two in a picturesque seaside village. The mental image one tends to conjure up fits the town of Portofino like a glove—a place on earth better suited than most for arriving in, or driving around, a Ferrari with the top down. So much so, in fact, that Ferrari has bestowed the town's name upon one of its most coveted convertibles. Welcome to the Ferrari Portofino M.

We will get to that 'M' a little later, but first, we simply must take a moment to appreciate this wonderful design—arguably one of Ferrari’s finest achievements in modern times. It is equally beautiful with the roof up or down—a feat that is notoriously difficult to pull off in automotive design.

It is a sleek and elegant design to behold. Here, it wears a grey-toned suit that Ferrari calls ∗Blu Tour de France 70∗—a timeless, classic Ferrari color that perfectly suits the understated Portofino. The deep blue bodywork is complemented by grey five-spoke wheels, which in turn conceal large ceramic brakes clamped by yellow calipers. The overall look is quintessentially Ferrari. The slender door handles open to reveal an interior that contrasts with the blue exterior, featuring natural tan leather accented by contrast stitching and details in aluminum and carbon fiber. The seats feature quilted leather with the ∗Cavallino∗ (Prancing Horse) stitched into the headrests. The driver’s area is dominated by the steering wheel—finished in the same ∗Cuoio∗ leather as the rest of the interior, with carbon fiber inserts and the now-familiar LED strip along the top rim that serves as a shift indicator. In front of the passenger sits a simple 'Portofino M' emblem, alongside a display that shows exactly how scared you ought to be.

And then there is that 'M'—M for ∗Modificata∗. It is a letter that has graced icons like the Ferrari 512; in the case of the Portofino, it signifies an updated and improved version of the car. The 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8—largely shared with its sibling, the 488—has received a power boost and now delivers a full 620 hp. Mated to an 8-speed transmission, it propels the car to 200 km/h in under 10 seconds—a full second faster than the 'standard' Portofino. The exterior has been refined with new bumpers and a more sculpted roofline. Furthermore, this specific example features a range of carbon-fiber exterior details that perfectly tie the whole look together.
